In the centre of Groningen
Academiegebouw (Academic building)
As an intellectual landmark, the university’s ‘Academiegebouw’, can be found in the city centre. The square in front on a sunny day is crowded with students and citizens alike, making it a vibrant place to be. Suited perfectly to its surroundings, it is in the core of the so-called ‘Book Quarter’, named after the many bookshops, the university library, public library, and many university buildings that are housed there.
Grote Markt: social centre
During the day, it is the perfect place to start a shopping spree. After dark, the Grote Markt’s bright city lights illuminate Groningen’s nightlife. Covered with restaurants of every ethnic variety, cinema’s, cafés, pubs, and clubs, this area is brimming with people every night.
Not to be missed, the most famous monument of Groningen has been watching over its citizens for over five centuries. Named for the patron saint of the city, the Martini tower is witness to the Christian heritage of the region. Nowadays, mosques and other places of worship are present in the city as well.
