Globalization poses a challenge to democracy in the 21st century. In the age of Snapchat and Instagram, rhetoric to play an important role in public debate. More than ever, rhetoric can play its part in realizing a truly sustainable society by inspiring new visions and transforming individuals into a community. This type of rhetoric requires future leaders that understand the power and pitfalls of rhetoric. As an instructor in the Honours program of the Faculty of Arts I want to help create these future leaders by equipping our students to meet the challenges of the 21st century. The fellowship will allow me to make a two week study trip to the United States and learn first-hand from experts how to incorporate the state of the art findings in rhetoric, rhetorical theory, and debating in the existing curriculum.
