An ounce healthier

‘How many kilos are you already in Brussel?’ It is a joke often heard in the European quarter. The comment suggests that the influence in Brussels sometimes wants to keep pace with waist circumference. With a bite to eat here and a drink there, a drink of this and a steak of that and all activities around European concerns, it sometimes proves difficult to worry about personal BMI.

Within HANNN ' Food and nutrion ' is rightly one of the main domains. After all, proper nutrition has a very big impact on our health and can make a major contribution to a long and healthy life. We already carry this forward to our environment, but perhaps it is at least as important to find innovative ways to convince policymakers. They are ultimately the ones who can make a significant contribution to positive changes in this area through policy and (research) grants.

There is work to do. The current focus of Horizon 2020 in food is mainly in the area of food security, while healthy food is only a small subcomponent of the work programme for 2016-2017. The latter is already an improvement compared to the previous work programme. Perhaps a result of the healthy snacks (carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes) which lately are more frequently being served during Brussels get-togethers next to the croquettes (so-called Dutch ‘bitterballen’) and flames (so-called Dutch ‘vlammetjes’) fried snacks.

So far, the weight of your humble columnist has remained fairly modest in all of this. Let's hope it does not affect our influence in Brussels.
