This thesis focuses on the synthesis of light-driven molecular rotary motors and azobenzene switches and the study of their dynamic behaviour in confined environments. Confining such molecules at interfaces potentially allows for gaining control over different interfacial phenomena (e.g. wetting, friction, adhesion or transport) through the control of (sub)molecular motion.
