Is Spotify influencing our music taste? (English-spoken)
Dr. Robert Prey | Assistant Professor University of Groningen

Dr. Robert Prey is an Assistant Professor at the Research Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, University of Groningen. He earned his PhD from the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University, Canada, with a dissertation on the political economy of music streaming services. His research interests include creative/cultural industries, data and society, global communications, and social and media theory.

Spotify is being called the ‘new radio’ for the influence it has on breaking new songs and artists, and for the important role it plays in music discovery and consumption. Does Spotify level the playing field or is it entrenching hierarchies between major labels, independent labels, and unsigned artists? How are we influenced by this new tech giant? These are some of the question Robert Prey tries to answer with his research.

In his talk ‘Music and Science; a (personal) magical mystery tour’, he’ll take you on a personal and magical journey to a place where science and music appear to fuse into one entity.
