Summer Ceremony in the Aula of the Academy Building

With the annual Summer Ceremony the academic year comes to an official end. It will be a private ceremony with a festive character.

During the meeting the following awards will be presented:

  • GUF-100 Awards (yearly)
  • Presentation of the Gratama Science Award (every 2 years)
  • Presentation of the Wierenga Rengerink Dissertation Award (yearly)

At the same time it's a farewell ceremony of our university for the international Master's students and a new group of international alumni ambassadors will be introduced.

After the Summer Ceremony there will be a BBQ for all guests in the garden of the Academy Building.

GUF-100 prizes

The GUF-100 prizes for excellent students were first awarded in 1993 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the GUF. The prize consists of a one-time scholarship of € 2,500 for the most excellent student of each faculty, to spend on academic study or research and preferably abroad.

Wierenga Rengerink Dissertation Award

During the Summer Ceremony on 3 July 2015, the Wierenga Rengerink Dissertation Award was awarded for the first time. This award consists of a prize of € 7,500 and an honorary medal. The PhD student who wrote the best dissertation will win the award.

Gratama Science Award

The Gratama Science Award is a prize to encourage young scientists who distinguish themselves by their innovative, socially relevant, and challenging research. The award is granted to members of the research communities of the universities of Leiden and Groningen, on the basis of their published research results during a period of maximally 5 years after obtaining the PhD degree.

Summer Ceremony for future international students

More than 1,000 international students graduate from the University of Groningen every year. Thus, the Summer Ceremony is organized in order to offer a farewell celebration to all our international students graduating.

The Summer Ceremony aims to provide a smoother transition from being 'international students' to becoming 'international alumni'. The content of the ceremony highlights the importance of being an alumnus and encourages our future international alumni to keep in touch with their alma mater. In addition, during the ceremony our group of international alumni ambassadors of next year will be introduced.

The livestream will be available on July the 6th from 16:00 pm
