Grant support

Educational grants are an important resource for teachers to advance their teaching skills and career by increasing visibility and recognition of the role of the educator. The Teaching Academy Groningen supports teachers in obtaining educational grants by providing information, inspiration and feedback sessions. The Teaching Academy Groningen is in contact with a wide network of experts and we are more than willing to help you to optimize your proposal.


TAG Support for Grant Applicants

Workshops & events

Throughout the year, teachers have the opportunity to sign up for workshops and events where they can gather information on various educational grants

Brainstorm sessions

Teachers can schedule brainstorm sessions with educational (grant) advisor(s) to receive guidance when they are uncertain about which grant to apply for or seek assistance in refining their ideas for educational projects.

Feedback & advice

Teachers can get feedback on their grant proposals and receive guidance from advisors to optimize their applications for educational grants. This process helps improve the quality of proposals and increases the chances of securing funding.

Writing groups

The TAG organizes writing groups for applicants, offering practical tips and tricks to assist in drafting a successful proposal. These sessions aim to provide valuable tips and tricks, exercises and guidance for teachers navigating the grant application process.

Network of experts and fellow applicants

The TAG boasts a large network of experts, laureates and fellow applicants. This network offers valuable resources and fosters a supportive community for individuals navigating the grant application process seeking guidance and assistance along the way.


Meet the TAG Grant and Educational Advisors:

Iain Johnston-White

Dr. Iain Johnston has a PhD in History (University of Cambridge). He is an Educationalist with Educational Support and Innovation (ESI) and the Teaching Academy Groningen (TAG). Whilst working at Aberystwyth University and the University of Roehampton (UK), he earned a Fellowship qualification at the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE).

His professional experience includes teaching and publishing in History and, as an Educationalist, specialisms in Course Design, Active Learning, and Diversity & Inclusion. He is currently a member of the Student Wellbeing Project and the Advisory Committee for Students with a Performance Disability (ACF). He uses his mixture of academic and educationalist experience to support the writing and implementation of innovation grants.

Franka van den Hende

Dr. Franka van den Hende has a Master's in Communications and Journalism and a PhD in Curriculum Internationalisation as a Dynamic Process of Organisational Change (University of Groningen and Concordia University, Montreal, Canada). Franka is a senior policy advisor and researcher. Her specific expertise concerns internationalisation and international relations, diversity and inclusion, and impact/change processes.

Franka brings over 30 years of experience in higher education, spanning academic research, teaching and writing, reviewing, policy advising, project management, and leadership, to advise, connect, and support teachers and researchers in finding and applying for grants.

Main grants: Comenius Leadership, National Education Award, NRO research

Rina de Vries

Rina de Vries has an MSc in Non-Western Social and Analytical Demography (University of Groningen), and an MA in English Language and Culture (Radboud University Nijmegen. Whilst working at the University of Birmingham (UK), they earned a Senior Fellow qualification at the Higher Education Academy (now Advance HE) and a certificate as an Intercultural Skills Trainer. 

Their professional experience includes academic editing, teaching academic English and skills, intercultural training, and educational development (e-learning, The Inclusive Teacher, UG). To help you navigate the grant application process, Rina draws on their experience in academic writing and supporting the grant applications of a wide range of academics.
