Allers, Prof. Maarten

Maarten Allers is Professor of Economics of Sub-National Governments, focusing mainly on public finance, economics of decentral governments (municipalities, provinces, water boards), financial relationships, local taxes and political economics. In addition, Allers is director of COELO, the University of Groningen Centre for Research on Local Government Economics. COELO is an independent research institute that has its own research programme as well as conducting contract research. Clients include municipalities, provinces, ministries and businesses. COELO regularly publishes thought-provoking studies on municipal finance and taxes. Recent calculations by COELO for the TV programme Nieuwsuur have revealed that ordinary citizens are meeting more and more of the costs of the regional water authorities.
