Scherpen, Prof. Jacquelien

Jacquelien Scherpen studied Applied Mathematics at the University of Twente. She also acquired her PhD there in 1994 with a thesis titled Balancing for nonlinear systems. At the University of Groningen, she is Professor of Systems & Control, and currently also rector magnificus.
Her research applies to all kinds of technical systems, from controlling robots to regulating smart energy systems. Scherpen made significant contributions to the mathematics of balancing models for ‘non-linear control systems’, such as a thermostat linked to a heating system, thereby reducing their complexity. It is noteworthy that she also collaborated interdisciplinarily with behavioural scientists and economists to incorporate human factors.
In 2020, Scherpen was appointed as the Captain of Science in the High-Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) top sector. She was the 2023 winner of the Prins Friso Engineering Award, making her the Engineer of the Year. "Scherpen devotes herself to the visibility of engineering in general, among other things by making young people enthusiastic for the engineering profession and breaking down gender stereotyping regarding female engineers. All in all, this makes her a role model for new generations of engineers," the jury said. Additionally, she was the first Dutch person to receive the Hendrik W. Bode Lecture Prize for her achievements in the scientific development of control systems and engineering.
Scherpen speaks out publicly on science, technology and the development of talent. As a woman in a technical, male-dominated field, Scherpen fulfils her role as a role model with vigour.
As of 1 September 2023, Scherpen is the UG's rector magnificus. In 2026 she has been appointed as a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
