Han Olff
Han Olff

Han Olff is Professor of Ecology at the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He is specialised in ecology, biodiversity, nature management, nature protection and sustainable landscapes. Olff graduated with a degree in biology from the University of Groningen in 1988. In 1992, he gained his PhD in Groningen in the field of ecology, after which he worked as a researcher at the University of Wageningen and in the United States. In 2002, Olff was appointed as Professor of Community and Conservation Ecology at the UG. Here, he researched biodiversity and nature management in the Netherlands as well as in the tropical savannahs and rainforests.

In his research, Olff has a focus on the structure and functioning of diverse communities and ecosystems, giving special attention to the interaction between plants, herbivores, detrivores and predators. Olff uses the outcomes of his research to give regular advice about nature protection. Alongside his work at the UG, Olff is a member of the supervisory board of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and of ARK Nature. Olff also sits on the Academic Advisory Board of the Parc National du Banc d’Arguin, Mauritania and of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research. In addition, he is a board member of the Netherlands Ecological Research Network (NERN).
