Francesco Picchioni is hoogleraar Chemical Product Engineering aan de Faculteit Science and Engineering. Hij doet onderzoek naar nieuwe technologieën om polymeren, de lange moleculen waaruit plastics zijn opgebouwd, te hergebruiken.

Picchioni zorgde voor een doorbraak in de recycling van rubber. De polymeren in rubber zijn met elkaar verbonden zodat ze een soort moleculair netwerk vormen. Het leek onmogelijk dit netwerk uit elkaar te halen zonder de polymeren te beschadigen. Dat leidt tot kortere polymeren, waarmee alleen nog een lagere kwaliteit rubber is te maken. Picchioni vond een manier om de kortere polymeren zo aan elkaar te verbinden dat er nieuw rubber ontstond van gewone kwaliteit. Deze technologie maakt het mogelijk om het rubber van autobanden opnieuw te gebruiken in de productie van verschillende producten. Dankzij dit onderzoek worden deze banden niet meer gelabeld als afval, maar kunnen ze worden beschouwd als grondstoffen voor andere producten. Het bedrijf New Born Rubber gebruikt deze gepatenteerde methode om nieuw rubber te maken voor producten zoals slippers en opvouwbare fietsmandjes. Voor zijn project 'Rubber Recycling', won Picchioni de Ben Feringa Impact Award 2025.

Picchioni houdt zich ook bezig met projecten die het hergebruiken van producten van pvc (polyvinylchloride) en polypropeen onderzoeken. Polypropeen en pvc vormen grofweg 42% van alle geproduceerde plastics. Als we deze niet hergebruiken, belanden er grote hoeveelheden op de vuilnisbelt en zullen ze aanzienlijke milieuproblemen veroorzaken.
