The University of Groningen (UG) remains seriously concerned about the budget cuts affecting higher education. Once again, the government has not announced any relief from the cuts on Prinsjesdag; in fact, it appears that a further 25 to 30 million euros in cuts will be added.

The UG is a driving force for development in the Northern Netherlands. Every euro cut from education and research directly impacts our students, researchers, and the future of our region.

The UG will try to absorb these additional cuts through natural staff turnover. As people retire or pursue other career paths, we can adjust our workforce to this new reality, likely without the need for compulsory redundancies.

The UG emphasizes that investments in knowledge are crucial right now for societal challenges and regional innovation, from energy and climate to health. Knowledge is not an expense, but an investment. We call on politicians to reconsider this course of action.
