Dr W. H. (Lilian) Posthumus-van der Goot (1897–1989) described herself as a passionate, non-partisan feminist. From the mid-1930s until shortly before her death, she campaigned for women's social rights and better human relationships. She was a well-known figure in her time. She was the first woman in the Netherlands to obtain a doctorate in economic sciences, in 1930. An active and creative member of the pre-war feminist network, she opposed government plans in the mid-1930s to ban women from working. She was the editor-in-chief of popular AVRO radio show Short Conversations from Woman to Woman for fifteen years. She is best known today for establishing the International Archive for the Women's Movement (IAV) in 1935 and for her historical overview work From Mother to Daughter, first published in 1948 with revised editions in 1968 and 1978. In this first biography of the extraordinary Lilian Posthumus-van der Goot, Antia Wiersma examines how she managed to make her mark in diverse areas of society as a married woman and mother at a time when it was unusual for women, and married women in particular, to be socially visible and active.
