Staff members with discipline Marine & Freshwater Biology

Academia develops at the interface of different fields. This is one reason why the University of Groningen is home to a wide range of fields, each with a great number of subject specialists. The overview below, which is based on a standard categorization of fields, will help you find the right expert for each field. If you cannot find the expert you are looking for in this list, try searching via a related field or faculty; you may find him or her there.

I’m researcher at the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), and a professor of Coastal Ecology at the University of Groningen. I study interactions between organisms and their environment in coastal ecosystems. My research primarily focuses on the ecosystem-level importance and functioning of “ecosystem engineers” – species that significantly modify habitat conditions. Ecosystem engineers are often the “foundation species” of a system, which basically means that many other species depend on them. Over the last decades, human impact has resulted in worldwide declines of foundation species-structured ecosystems such as bivalve reefs, seagrass meadows and salt marshes. In my research, I combine fieldwork, laboratory experiments, GIS and computer models to unravel how these systems function and how to preserve and restore them.

Biology and ecology of sharks and rays (elasmobranchs), mainly focused on intertidal ecosystems and tropical systems. Species that I have worked with include the great hammerhead shark, white shark, various reef shark species, stingrays, guitarfish and silky sharks.

LANDSCAPES OF FACILITATION

In a wide range of ecosystems, facilitative interactions take place between different species. So-called facilitation cascades can play an important role in structuring species communities on both the long and short-range scale, and may positively influence biodiversity. By studying these interactions, I intend to show the importance of facilitation cascades for nature conservation policies.

post doc
During my PhD project, I will investigate the spatial distribution of various benthic communities of the North Sea bottom at the Dutch Continental Shelf and their resilience to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. This project is collaborative with a PhD in Yerseke (NIOZ) and a PhD in Delft (TU Delft), all three projects using different spatial scales to study benthic communities.
With multibeam scatter data (Delft), underwatervideo (me) and box core data (Yerseke), the total Dutch Continental Shelf is investigated, determining vulnerability of the various communities to ease environmental policy and management.
