Securing economy and energy in the North Sea region
The 9th edition of the annual Wind meets Gas symposium will take place at the Martinikerk in Groningen on October 9-10, 2025. This year’s theme addresses the energy trilemma: balancing the transition to greener energy while ensuring affordability and security.
Energy affordability is an increasing concern. Rising energy prices, along with higher taxes, CO2 costs, and grid levies, are driving up overall expenses. This impacts not only households but also industries, particularly energy-intensive sectors, which face challenges in maintaining international competitiveness and making sound investments. Meanwhile, investment in renewable energy capacity appears to be slowing. How can we navigate these challenges?
Energy security has also become a pressing issue. Geopolitical and trade tensions have created a less predictable policy environment, with uncertain consequences for the global energy transition. Beyond economic concerns, the risk of physical disruptions to energy systems is growing. As a result, safeguarding energy security is now a top priority.
While affordability and security gain political traction, climate and greening efforts seem to be receiving less emphasis. Where does Northwest Europe—and the North Seas region in particular—stand in this trilemma? Can the region find a way to meet climate goals while keeping energy affordable and secure? These questions will be central to the symposium, reflected in this year’s subtitle: Securing Economy and Energy in the North Seas Region.
