You are invited to participate in the 54-hour virtual hackathon with the goal to develop innovative solutions and ideas that address the challenge: 'How can green hydrogen contribute to regional development?'

TEAMS: Multidisciplinary teams (i.e. law, science, engineering, psychology, spatial science) are encouraged, as well as mixed South Africa and Europe teams

STREAMS: hydrogen mobility, e-storage, water technologies for production, skills and training, purification, standards creation, cost-effective electrolysers, smart real estate for production, and hydrogen leak detection, awareness and engagement

Background information

Climate change is affecting our planet and our own health. It is inevitable that we need another energy transition just like we experienced years ago when we transitioned from coal to gas. To meet climate goals, it is necessary to reduce CO2 emissions by generating and to use renewable energy with solar, wind and hydropower. To make heavy industry, heavy transport and aviation sustainable, however, electricity is not enough and gas is needed. Green hydrogen could be this gas.

Green hydrogen is a gas that can be made by electrolysis of water with green electricity. Worldwide, plans are being made and projects developed to make, transport and use green hydrogen. All this does now offer regions that previously did not produce energy the opportunity to play a role in the global energy economy. Green hydrogen has the potential to make significant contributions to sustainable regional development. Hydrogen can promote energy security, job creation, and innovation, among other benefits. By exploring the various ways in which hydrogen can be used, we can identify new opportunities and solutions that can benefit communities and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Looking at the challenge from an interdisciplinary point of view is crucial in this matter. As well as the collaboration between students from South Africa and Europe. By sharing knowledge and expertise across different regions and cultures, we can create new ideas and find innovative solutions to the challenges we face.
