Computational Biology and Cognition
The Bioinformatics Group at UCG investigates how molecular structure and gene-regulatory programs shape cell-state dynamics in health and disease. Its methods combine AI-driven molecular modeling with neuroimmunology. Amin’s work uses machine learning and quantum-mechanical calculations to understand metalloenzymes and other biomolecular systems. Medeiros-Furquim contributes expertise in microglia, the immune cells of the brain, and how epigenetics and immune memory are related to neuroinflammation (e.g., in Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and brain irradiation). Nannen adds AI, stochastic optimization, and agent-based simulation to bridge scales and build explanatory models from molecules to cell populations and tissues.
