NRC interview with Maria Loi

10 May 2016

Our leading national newspaper NRC interviewed Prof. Dr. Maria Loi, who is currently a member of the UCG board of Education, on her research in understanding the fundamental properties of optoelectronic materials.

Loi, Professor Photo Physics and OptoElectronics, researches the photophysical and optoelectronic properties of unconventional semiconductors. The last three years, she focuses on a new type of photovoltaic cell, based on perovskite.

These perovskite-based cells are first developed in 2009, but the development of these cells skyrocketed the last year, with an efficiency from 3 till 24 percent.

Prof. Dr. Loi has been researching the development of these cells for years and she stresses the possibilities in use of these cells for daily life, using the cells in structures for bricks, roof tiles, windows and even clothing.

Maria Loi has been working for the University of Groningen from 2006, via the Rosalind Franklin Fellowship. In 2014 Loi received the title of Professor in Photo Physics and OptoElectronics. She is a member of the University College Groningen Board of Education and contact person for the Science faculty.
