prof. dr. N. (Nico) van Yperen

I completed high school in 1977 (Delft) and Teacher Training College in 1981 (The Hague). In 1987, I received an MSc in Psychology from the University of Groningen, followed by a PhD in Psychology in 1990 from Radboud University Nijmegen. At Radboud University, I served as an associate professor from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, I returned to the University of Groningen as an associate professor, and in 2003 I was appointed full professor. I am currently Professor of Sport & Performance Psychology and am involved in the Expertise Center for Talent Development, MSc program Talent Development & Creativity, and the general board of the Sport Science & Innovation Groningen.
My research interests broadly concern the mental dimensions of sport and performance, with particular emphasis on achievement motivation and talent development. In addition to conducting research on these topics, I also write books, columns, and blogs on these themes (see, for example, sportscience.blog (in Dutch).
Occasionally, I provide consultancy services to athletes, coaches, sport organizations, and consultancy firms, typically on issues such as motivation and performance, talent development, stress and well-being, and coaching, supervision, and mentoring.
