prof. dr. N. (Nico) van Yperen

Professor of Sport & Performance Psychology

I completed High School in 1977 (Delft), and Teacher Training College in 1981 (The Hague). In 1987, I received a MSc in Psychology at the University of Groningen, and in 1990, my PhD in Psychology at Radboud University Nijmegen. In Nijmegen, I was an associate professor from 1990 to 1994. In 1994, I returned to the University of Groningen for a position as associate professor (from 2003 full professor). Currently, I am professor of Sport & Performance Psychology, involved in the Expertise Center for Talent DevelopmentMSc program Talent Development & Creativity, and the general board of the Sport Science & Innovation Groningen.
Broadly speaking, my interests are the mental aspects of sport and performance, and achievement motivation and talent development in particular, see also (in Dutch).
Research questions are, for example:
1. What determines enjoyment, success, failure, and dropout in achievement situations (sports, but also education and work)?
2. How can we enhance and improve self-regulated learning and resilience?
3. Are coaching and mentoring effective tools to develop talent?
I have published in many peer reviewed journals, including the International Review of Sport and Exercise Psychology, Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology, Psychology of Sport & Exercise, Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, The Sport Psychologist, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, Motivation Science, Motivation and Emotion, Human Performance, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, and Journal of Educational Psychology.
Occasionally, I provide consultancy services to athletes, coaches, sport organizations, and consultancy firms, typically on issues such as motivation and performance, talent development, stress and well-being, and coaching, supervision, and mentoring.
