Expertise

My research aims to identify the molecular mechanisms active during inception, exacerbation and remission of complex diseases of the respiratory tract. My ultimate goal is to develop novel strategies for diagnosis and prevention of, or intervention in these chronic inflammatory disorders. To achieve this, I combine state-of-the-art single-cell technologies with functional genomic and molecular biological approaches. My research uses primary cells and tissues from patients with allergic rhinitis, asthma and COPD and matched controls to identify the biological consequences of genetic susceptibility to these diseases for the immune and structural cells of the airways. Advanced 3D primary cell cultures, (sc)RNA sequencing and image analysis are used for validation and functional follow-up.  My long-term goals in research can only be accomplished by multidisciplinary teams of experts in clinical research, medicine, single-cell and imaging technology, pharmacology and computational biology. I strongly believe that open, multidisciplinary team science holds the potential to make the next steps towards addressing the 21st century scientific and societal challenges. My research thrives through such collaborations across disciplines and institutes. In addition, I also pursue an active role in international consortia relevant to my research goals, such as the Human Cell Atlas consortium, being one of the 4 coordinators of the Lung Biological Network. I want my research to have impact through knowledge transfer to the general population, to the interested patient, and to undergraduate and graduate students; through advancing respiratory research by academic, clinical and industrial stakeholders; and where possible through valorisation of my research outcomes.
