Ms. Smit is an assistant professor in the Legal History department, where she focuses on researching and teaching current law and its historical development. In 2020, she obtained her PhD cum laude with a dissertation on the Roman law pignus nominis. In her current research, ms. Smit emphasizes the lessons that can be drawn from legal history to address contemporary societal and legal challenges. In addition to her teaching and research, ms. Smit coordinates a Dutch masterprogram (the Togamaster) and serves as a member of a.o. the Faculty Council and the programm committee for Dutch law. Moreover, as the faculty's confidential advisor for PhD candidates, she contributes to creating a safe and supportive environment for young researchers.
