A. (Angela) Cristiano
I am mainly interested in sociolinguistics, phonetics, and dialectology, and I strive for integrated approaches between these fields.
My past research has focused on language variation and change in heritage language speakers - analyzing patterns of rhotic reduction in heritage and homeland Calabrian Italian, and on individual patterns of phonetic reduction in spontaneous Neapolitan Italian speech.
I am currently working on a PhD project analyzing the Italian diaglossic repertoire via a sociophonetic investigation. Through the use of methodologies and frameworks coming from different fields, my research will dwell into production and perception aspects tied to Neapolitan and Italian language, ethnicity, and culture. It will provide an analysis of the emic status of the relevant varieties, using strong, empirical, foundations.
