Upcoming online exhibition about Sibrandus Stratingh by the University Library

A project from Éva Szabó and Colin Janssen within the Atelier Living Heritage

This summer (2022) the Special Collections department of the University Library will unveil its new online exhibition about Sibrandus Stratingh (1785-1841). Sibrandus Stratingh was a Groninger chemist and inventor who developed the so-called 'Karretje van Stratingh'. This ‘karretje’ is an early predecessor of the electric car. Sibrandus and his inventions were known both on a national and international scale. The online exhibition includes among others letters, deeds, diplomas and a portrait from Stratingh's. These documents are part of the Special Collections department of the University Library.

During the online exhibition additional attention is paid to the cultural and social context of Stratingh's work. The exhibition is inspired by Ulco Kooystra who recently published a dissertation on Stratingh entitled: “The artistic chemist. The innovative science of the Groninger professor Sibrand Stratingh”. The online exhibition has been created by two Master History students of the University of Groningen, Éva Szabó and Colin Janssen. The exhibition will become accessible to all via the website (www.rug.nl/library/heritage/exhibitions/virtual-exhibitions/) of the Special Collections department of the University Library. If you are interested in science, inventors or have a desire to learn more about the university's past we can highly recommend visiting the online exhibition. Later this year additional announcements will be made regarding the opening day and/or other activities linked to the online exhibition.
