First light from the new cluster
Today the new computer cluster got power for the first time. Everything seems to work, so now its time to do the configuration and testing. It should become available for the user in the beginning of 2010.
In the old days computingcenters were normally cooled to for example 18 degrees celsius. However nowadays the centers can run at much higher temperatures to save the energy spend on cooling. This cluster raised the temperature by 4 degrees (when the machine was still idle). This used to have a negative impact on the lifespan of the computers, but modern equipment can handle these higher temperatures with ease.
