University of Groningen introduces new timetable software

Starting this year, the university's timetable planners will be using the new TimeEdit timetable software. They will use it to compile the University of Groningen's lecture timetables, starting with the timetable for the first semester of the 2026-2027 academic year.
The transition to the new scheduling software involved intensive preparation and is part of 'the New Timetabling Project'. In this project, timetablers from all faculties are working together with the CIT to set up the new timetable application.
Replacement of Syllabus+
The reason for the project was the necessary replacement of the current scheduling software, Syllabus+. Not only is this software severely outdated, it is also difficult to integrate with other systems. The renewal offered an opportunity to list all the requirements for a future-proof timetabling application.
More efficient scheduling process
The New Timetabling Project is more than just a switch to new timetabling software; it also involves a new, more efficient approach to timetabling within the University of Groningen. Until now, each faculty had its own way of doing things, but the new setup involves more cooperation and coordination because the faculties use the same methods.
Timetabling is the backbone of education. If the timetable goes down, students and lecturers can no longer find each other - Michiel Katoele, strategic timetabler, UG
More flexible planning
The new setup allows for more flexible use of (educational) spaces. Ultimately, the intention is that spaces that are not typically used for education can be used for that purpose. By working together in a single timetabling application and all using the same working method, the allocation of available educational spaces becomes not only easier, but also fairer.
For students, the change is very limited: the website rooster.rug.nl will have a new look, but will continue to provide the same information.
