AI-Aware Assessment Planning

The ability of GenAI to generate plausible work - written, including essays and even full theses, videos, audio, images and more - has made it more challenging to assure that learning has actually happened. How can we know if a student's work is actually theirs and that they have a deep understanding of the content? How can we ensure the validity of our assignments and tests? Around the world, higher education professionals are now faced with the same questions related to these wicked problems.

In this workshop we will look at some different models being experimented with around the globe, such as the Two Lane Approach and IA Matrix from Australia, along with the “Swiss Cheese” model of academic integrity. Rather than ban the use of GenAI or take-home assignments, or fall into an unsustainable “policing” role as an instructor, in this workshop we will work more at rethinking our assessment design at course and programme levels. This doesn’t have to be an arduous process; let us lead you through the “3 R” process of remove, revise, and replace to help you come up with a more durable assessment plan that is aligned with learning outcomes and goals.

Participants are requested to bring an inventory of their current course (or programme) assessment methods to the workshop. Individual sign up is welcome; attending together with a colleague(s) from your department or programme might also make for some very productive discussions and solutions.

Target audience
Instructors who would like to think about their assessment design and methods proactively, with both GenAI inclusive and GenAI resistant options as possibilities.
