Prof. D. Boer

Daniël Boer (Netherlands, 1969) is currently a professor of Theoretical Subatomic Physics and is an expert on Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the microscopic theory of the strong nuclear interaction. His work on polarization effects of quarks and gluons has been investigated at major particle accelerator facilities worldwide, such as at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland), KEK (Tsukuba, Japan), DESY (Hamburg, Germany), BNL (Upton, New York) and Jefferson Lab (Newport News, VA, USA). He is currently a member of CERN’s SPS committee and of the Scientific Council of the National Institute for Subatomic Physics (NIKHEF), and is European Representative in the Steering Committee of the Electron-Ion Collider Users Group (EICUG). In addition, he is deputy programme director of the Bachelor’s programmes Physics and Applied Physics at the Groningen Faculty of Science and Engineering, until a successor has been appointed.

Boer studied theoretical physics at Utrecht University. He worked as a FOM PhD student at NIKHEF and obtained his PhD degree in 1998 from the VU University Amsterdam for research on asymmetries in high energy scattering processes. This was followed by a postdoc position at Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA) in the RBRC group of Nobel laureate Tsung-Dao Lee. Subsequently, he obtained a fellowship by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, which in 2005 led to a tenured Assistant professor position at the VU University Amsterdam. In the period 2009-2013 he worked in the KVI theory group, after which he joined the Van Swinderen Institute for Particle Physics and Gravity (VSI).
