Health in Discourse

In the Discourse and Communication group staff members study Health related topics from a wide range of theoretical interests using various methodologies. Central to all this research is optimizing health communication based on insights from communication and linguistic research.

Researchers

  • Dr. Jana Declerq works on the various discourses associated with the perception of pain (Veni project)
  • Lourens Kraft van Ermel works on how patients produce lay diagnosis when asked for their perception of the cause of their pain in physiotherapy sessions concerned with atypical pain
  • Dr. Joāo Graca works on persuasion research in health with a focus on change
  • Prof. Dr. John Hoeks works on persuasion research and specifically on dialogue systems in which people can discuss plant-based diets
  • Prof. Dr. Mike Huiskes works on various projects. He studies various topics in consultations in geriatric care and in the pain clinic. He also studies learning and collaborating in the operating theatre. Results of these studies have been reported in academic journals in the Arts (focusing on Discourse Studies), Journals on Medical Education and journals in the field of Medicine (Annals of Surgery) as well as in professional journals. The results of these studies have been implemented in training programs for medical professionals. This training program was awarded the UMCG vernieuwingsprijs
  • Dr. Lotte van Poppel works on the use of metaphor by patients during consultations. She also works on shared decision making in consultations
