Order of the Star of Italy for Prof. Renzo Sancisi
At a ceremony held last Thursday at the residence of the Italian Ambassador in The Hague, Prof. Renzo Sancisi received the honour of Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (“Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy”), conferred by the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and presented by the Italian Ambassador to the Netherlands, Augusto Massari. Honours in the Ordine della Stella d’Italia are awarded to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the prestige of Italy abroad and to the promotion of friendly relations with Italy. It plays a role similar to that of the Nederlandse Leeuw.

Prof. Sancisi is an Emeritus Professor at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute. He is internationally renowned for his pioneering work on the structure, dynamics, and evolution of galaxies through radio observations of neutral hydrogen and radio continuum, carried out in particular with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. Over the course of a distinguished career at the Kapteyn Institute, beginning in the 1970s, he has made fundamental contributions to the study of galaxy kinematics, dark matter in spiral galaxies, warped gas disks, and gas accretion in galaxies.
Since 1997, Prof. Sancisi has also held a part-time position at the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics in Bologna and has been instrumental in fostering relations between Italy, Bologna in particular, and Groningen. Through his scientific achievements and unique personality, Prof. Sancisi has influenced generations of researchers and brought distinction both to Italian and Dutch science and to astronomy worldwide. The honour he has received recognises a career of exceptional scientific leadership and lasting international impact.
