PhD ceremony Bram Lap

On 23 September 2025, Bram Lap defends his thesis called Optical modelling and experimental verification of few-mode spectrometers in the far-infrared.
Summary of his thesis:
This dissertation introduces the Huygens-Fresnel Modal Framework (HFMF) for modeling few-mode behavior in far-infrared spectrometers, which is essential for the next generation of high-sensitivity instruments. The HFMF accurately describes partial coherence and the associated artifacts, as confirmed by simulations and experimental measurements with a newly developed THz-VNA. Using the HFMF and the THz-VNA, the modal properties of far-infrared spectrometers can be effectively simulated and analyzed, ensuring that the next generation of instruments delivers the desired performance
