NWO TOP grant for astronomers Oosterloo and Caputi
The Physical Science Division of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded a TOP grant to two astronomers from the University of Groningen: Tom Oosterloo and Karina Caputi. NWO awarded a total of sixteen TOP grants to scientists in the fields of astronomy, computer science and mathematics, or a combination of these disciplines. Seven scientists are senior researchers with a proven track record, while the other nine are junior researchers at the beginning of their academic careers. The scientists will receive total funding of € 6 million. The grants are intended for innovative, ground-breaking, high-risk research, which does not focus on a specific subject.
Prof. T.A. Oosterloo (ASTRON) has been awarded a grant from Compartment 1, intended for senior researchers with a proven track record of significant research results over the last 10 years. The research proposal that has been honoured is entitled ‘The Hunt for the Darkest Galaxies’. A total of € 4 million has been divided over seven projects in Compartment 1.
Dr K.I. Caputi , Rosalind Franklin Fellow at the University of Groningen, has been awarded a grant from Compartment 2, intended for junior researchers at the beginning of their academic careers. Her successful research proposal is entitled ‘Mapping the Peak Star Formation Activity of the Universe with New Nanotechnological Devices’. Nine young researchers have been awarded Top 2 funding, worth a total of just under € 2 million.
