European Politics and Society
The theme group European Politics & Society, based in the Research Centre for the Study of Democratic Cultures and Politics (DemCP), University of Groningen, brings together researchers from various disciplines who study the multi-level and multifaceted nature of political, historical and societal developments across the European continent. This focus covers a wide range of topics, including (but not limited to) populism, politicization, democracy and the history of democratization, (transnational) party politics, far-right politics, European integration and disintegration, social movements and popular politics, political communication and qualitative and quantitative research methods in social science. How societal conflict interacts with political system formation at European level through discourse and narratives stands at the heart of our research.
Our theme group organizes bi-monthly REPS seminars (RuG European Politics & Society) where speakers both internal and external to the RuG present their latest research. Anyone interested in attending the seminar can contact the organizers by sending an email to Hugh McDonnell.
