Archaeology of Northwestern Europe
About the Research Group
The focal point of our research is the interaction between man and environment. This general issue is studied within two interrelated research fields. The first is the long-term development of cultural landscapes , in which the research on early prehistory focuses on the IJssel-Vecht river system in the east-central Netherlands, while the research on the later prehistory and protohistory is carried out in the terp-mound and adjacent sand area of the Northern Netherlands. The second research field is that of economic landscapes , in which the exploitation of the environment is studied within a long-term framework from Mesolithic interference in natural landscapes, via hoe cultivation (Swifterbant) and Celtic Fields to horticulture in the terp-mound area. In both fields research is carried out at both the site level and at regional and supra-regional levels. Special attention is given to the maritime cultural landscape.
This chair also encompasses the research carried out in Archaeobotany and Zooarchaeology, which have a wide geographic scope including Northwestern Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Levant, the Near East, and Turkey. We expect to develop new interdisciplinary projects and collaborations on a multitude of topics including diet, food economy, agricultural practices, crop choices, provenance, mobility and palaeo-environment reconstructions in the future.
