The structure of the programme

The training programme of the GSH comprises a diverse selection of modules. You are obliged to attend:

• The GSH introductory event
• Academic Integrity
• The GO-No GO information event

In addition to these obligatory modules, you are expected to follow a minimum of 6 ECTS from the GSH or Federation of Graduate Schools SSH programme. Following a minimum number of courses from the GSH or the Federation of Graduate Schools SSH programme allows you to build a network and embed your research in the Faculty of Arts and the UG. All obligatory modules are offered in either online or in hybrid formats, to accommodate participation by our diverse community of PhD candidates

PhD candidates are expected to add 10-15 ECTS to the locally organized programme through participation in courses organized by national research schools in their own field, or through other national and international activities (see above). Options may also be chosen from the Faculty of Arts Research Master programmes, Language Courses at the UG and from the programmes of other Graduate Schools of the University of Groningen.

As a complement to the formal training programme, the PhD council, the independent representation of the PhD candidates, organizes courses and workshops throughout the year, in order to support PhD candidates in the practical aspects of their work. These will be announced via email and the GSH newsletter.

Registration

Registration for modules takes place online via the website of the GSH. For some courses the date is not definitive, it depends on the number of participants and the availability of suitable venues and speakers. You can sign up if you are interested in the content of the course and you will be the first to receive updates, and have the first opportunity to register for the course. Most modules of the GSH PhD Training Programme are open for all PhD candidates affliated with one of the Graduate Schools of the Federation of Graduate Schools in Social Sciences and Humanities . However, if there are limited places, GSH PhD students take priority.
Registration for a course opens when the date and venue are official. This will be announced via email (always to your UG email address!), a month prior to the event date.

Note: registration for a course implies the commitment to attend. Courses are organised based on the number of registrations and costs are incurred. If you are not able to attend, you should cancel at least 48 hours before the start of the event via gsh-groningen@rug.nl

Format

Courses may be given in online, offline or hybrid format. This will ensure both community building, which is best served by offline courses, and optimal access, through online or hybrid formats, for our international community of PhD candidates who may be conducting field work or research visits abroad.
