PhD Training

Graduate School for the Humanities

Members of the Graduate School for the Humanities follow a 30 ECTS training program, which they compose themselves, in accordance with their specific needs. The GSH acts as a broker for these training programs, offering a number of courses in-house, and acting as a liaison with the central Groningen Graduate School (GGS) and with sixteen National Research Schools, organized in the Landelijk Overleg Geesteswetenschappelijke Onderzoeksscholen (LOGOS).

Also associated with the GSH are a number of special PhD-training programs, organized by the Research School for Behavioral, Cognitive, and Neurosciences (BCN), the Erasmus Mundus-II program IDEALAB, and the Spirit Indonesia-Groningen program (SInGA).

PhD-candidates can also add their own training elements, including participation in international conferences and summer schools, and research visits to national and international centers of excellence.

The local training program can be found online and in the GSH information brochure.

Please consult the sign-up dates for the respective courses in the individual course descriptions. These dates will be of great help for the practical organization of the courses. The registration deadlines are (usually) two months in advance in order to create a programme tailored to the wishes and interests of the group of participants.

Should you have to cancel your participation in a course, please do so as early as possible, preferably no later than a month before the course is scheduled.

Possible courses, credits and research schools

The training program of the GSH comprises 9 ECTS of compulsory modules and up to 17 ECTS in further credits from optional modules.

PhD candidates are expected to add 10-15 ECTS to the locally organized program through participation in courses organized by national research schools in their own field, or through other national and international activities. LOGOS offers an overview of all the national Dutch Research Schools in the Humanities.

Options may also be chosen from the Faculty of Arts Research Master programs and from the programmes of other Graduate Schools of the University of Groningen.
