Does the Graduate School have a PhD student programme in which I can enroll?

Question

Does the Graduate School have a PhD student programme in which I can enroll?

Answer

No, in contrast to Graduate Schools in, for example, the USA, we do not have such a system. At the University of Groningen, all PhD projects are funded individually. PhD candidates are either considered employees, or scholarship candidates, or external candidates. As employees, PhD candidates earn a monthly salary and do not pay any tuition fee. In order to become an employed PhD candidate, people apply to PhD positions that are advertised. Scholarship candidates have a research grant or stipend/scholarship to pay for their studies. External candidates are employed elsewhere and they fully fund their position with private finances or they receive (partial) compensation from their employer. In the case of an own research grant or private finances, candidates contact the staff member with whom they would like to collaborate directly to discuss the possibilities for a PhD position.
