Research proposal Dr Daphne Penna en Dr Alasdair Grant to be financed by Groningen-Hamburg Funding

12 June 2023

Dr Daphne Penna (Assistant Professor of Byzantine Law at the UG) and Dr Alasdair Grant (postdoc Research Associate Mediterranean and Middle Eastern literature and history at the Universität Hamburg) recently jointly submitted an application to the Groningen-Hamburg Funding programme. Their application has been awarded and so the research project 'Loyalty Oaths in the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamicate Legal Spheres (LORILS)' will be funded over the course of a one-year period, commencing later in 2023.

Legal culture during the first millennium AD

The LORILS project will focus on oaths of loyalty, specifically on finding out the extent to which a legal culture is visible in the shared environment during the first millennium AD. This will be studied by looking at various texts (law books, historiography, legal commentaries, treaties) and materials (coins, seals and inscriptions thereon).

The LORILS project aims to produce innovative and holistic research, bridging Christian and Islamic social practices with those of Roman predecessors. It will ensure that Groningen and Hamburg join academic hands in the fields of Law and the Humanities, laying a foundation for future collaborations.

Within the University of Groningen, the LORILS project falls under the wing of the Sources of Roman Byzantine Law research group. Within the Universität Hamburg, it belongs to the Thought and Religions profile initiative.

Groningen-Hamburg Funding

The Groningen-Hamburg Funding programme is designed to support academics at both institutes so that they can identify complementary research and become more engaged in project collaborations. Projects approved for funding have great potential to contribute to the strategic partnership between the University of Groningen and the Universität Hamburg, according to the programme.
