Practical information

Studying in Groningen requires that students arrange for other necessities beyond being accepted to participate in an LLM programme. Below you will find brief information about, and links to, practical information about studying in an LLM programme.
Accommodation
The University of Groningen does not have a campus, meaning the University itself does not have rooms available on offer for students. Ultimately, students are responsible for securing their own housing and accommodation for the duration of their studies. Further information and advice about finding accommodation in Groningen can be found here.
Living Expenses
Expenses incurred by the average student can vary, with the largest monthly expense being accommodation. For further details about estimation of monthly costs, please see here.
Insurances
All foreign students have to arrange for their own health insurance, third-party liability insurance and/or baggage insurance. Adequate coverage for medical costs is essential, and is a requirement for obtaining a residence permit for most students. The University of Groningen will not accept responsibility for medical costs or costs resulting from damage or accidents caused by the guest student during his/her stay in the Netherlands. For more information about health insurance, please see here.
Resident Permits and Visas
Most international students coming to study in the Netherlands must obtain the relevant residence permit and visas necessary to cover the duration of their studies. The University applies for these to the Dutch Immigration Serices (IND) on the behalf of accepted students. For full, and up-to-date information about all issues related to necessary permits and visas, please visit the visa and residence permit webpages of the university website, which are maintained by the Immigration Service Desk (ISD). Please contact the ISD (isd rug.nl) should you have any questions regarding Dutch visas and residence permits.
Student facilities
Röling Building
The Faculty of Law is located in the Röling Building in the city centre of Groningen, just next to the University Library and diagonal from the Academie Building. The International Office as well as the administrative offices of the Faculty are all housed in the Röling Building.
Library
The University Library (UB) is situated in the centre of Groningen. All students enrolled in the University of Groningen and all staff members are entitled to use the library. In order to borrow a book or journal one needs a library pass, which is your student card at the same time. The University Library is also home to the Law Library.
Computers
In the Röling Building, computer (including internet, e-mail and printer) facilities are available for all students. Besides this, there is a Wi-Fi-connection, so laptops can be used everywhere on the premises of the Law Faculty.
Electronic learning environment (Brightspace)
Brightspace is the electronic learning environment of the University of Groningen. Lecturers can use this system to provide students with all kinds of information about their course, but also to support their course. Next to this system, the University of Groningen also uses Progresswww, a system through which the registration for examinations, the ordering of readers and the checking of results can be conducted.
Language courses
Students that are interested in taking language courses while they are in Groningen can contact the Language Centre. The University of Groningen also offers free Dutch language courses to new international students that are participating in an English-taught degree programme.
Sports
At the ACLO, the Groningen University Sports Foundation, students and staff of the University can participate in many types of sports. Foreign students of the University of Groningen who would like to participate in sports can purchase an ACLO sport card registration on their student card after showing their student card at the information desk of the ACLO.
