Tuition fee reduction

For the academic years 2027–2028, 2028–2029 and 2029–2030, the University of Groningen (RUG) will provide financial support to students undertaking the Bachelor’s in Theology or a one-year Master’s programme at the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society as a second degree.

Who is eligible for this reduction?

Anyone who has already completed a degree programme and wishes to undertake one of the programmes offered by the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society as a second degree.

Which programmes does this reduction apply to?

What is the difference in costs?

In the Netherlands, you pay statutory annual tuition fees for your first degree programme (for the 2026/2027 academic year, this is €2,694 for a full-time programme and €1,984 for a part-time programme). If you commence a second degree programme after obtaining your degree, you will be subject to Institutional Tuition Fees II. For the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society, these have been set as follows for the 2026/2027 academic year:

  • Full-time Bachelor’s: €12,200
  • Part-time Bachelor’s: €6,700
  • Full-time Master’s: €16,900
  • Part-time Master’s: €9,000

Due to the temporary tuition fee reduction scheme, the new amounts per academic year will be as follows:

  • Full-time Bachelor’s: €7,447
  • Part-time Bachelor’s: €4,342
  • Full-time Master’s: €9,844
  • Part-time Master’s: €5,492

How long does this scheme last?

Three years. So if you start your Bachelor’s degree in Theology in September 2027 and complete it in three years, the scheme will apply to your entire degree.

Are there any other schemes?

Yes. If you speak Dutch and are interested in a work-study programme with the Classis Groningen-Drenthe, you will study part-time with us whilst also being in paid employment with the PKN. You can find more information about this on our page about the work-study programme.

Who can I contact if I have any questions?

Kees van den Ende and Nina van der Velden, study advisers: studyadvice.rcs@rug.nl.
