Paul van Sasse van IJsselt appointed professor by special appointment of Law and Religion

Per 1 December 2021 Paul van Sasse van IJsselt is appointed professor by special appointment of Law and Religion at the Faculty of Law at the University of Groningen. The chair has been endowed by the Groningen University Fund Foundation and is managed by the Department of General Law and Legal History, with close ties to the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies.

Van Sasse van IJsselt will focus on research into issues concerning fundamental rights in a pluralistic democratic society. He will mainly focus on the individual and collective freedom of religion and philosophy of life, also in relation to other fundamental rights in a multi-layered legal order and in a changing society.

Van Sasse van IJsselt is coordinating legal advisor on human rights and deputy head of the Constitutional Affairs Department at the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. He is also a deputy councilor in the criminal law section of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal. Furthermore, he is a researcher conflict of fundamental rights at the department of constitutional and administrative law of the VU Amsterdam and lecturer in human rights at the Academy for Legislation and Government Lawyers. He publishes extensively in the field of fundamental rights, legislation and the rule of law, is a member of the editorial board of the Tijdschrift voor Recht en Religie and is an active member of an extensive national and European network.

Van Sasse van IJsselt studied Law and Philosophy at Utrecht University and gained his PhD at the VU University Amsterdam.
