When can you start the programme?
You can start twice a year—in September or February. While the programme content remains consistent across both intakes, the sequence and scheduling of courses will vary depending on your chosen start date.

Contact hours and study commitment
All contact hours—including lectures, tutorials, and workshops—are scheduled on Friday (default) and/or Thursday (if needed). You can expect a full teaching day from 09:00 to 18:00 when two courses are taught and a half day for one course. Occasionally, you may be required to attend a session on a different day, such as when completing exams.

In addition to contact hours, you should allocate time for lecture preparation and assignment completion. This self-study workload is separate from scheduled teaching hours. We recommend reserving approximately 8 hours per week and per course, on average, for independent study.

If you had obtained a diploma from a Research University (WO) in the Netherlands, the Admissions Board will check if you meet the entry requirements for direct entry to the part-time programme.

If you had obtained a bachelor's degree from a University of Applied Sciences (HBO), you might need to follow a full-time pre-master's programme (30EC or 60EC). For students with an HBO bachelor's degree in Accountancy, we offer a part-time pre-master programme (30EC), with a duration of one year. Every application will be reviewed individually by the Admissions Board. The Pre-MSc Accountancy is offered both full-time (6 months) and part-time (12 months). Both programmes start in September and February. The entry requirements for the MSc Accountancy profile – Part-Time programme are the same as those for the full-time variant (see requirements: https://www.rug.nl/masters/accountancy-profile/#!requirements).

To be eligible for admission to this Master's, you need to hold an academic Bachelor's or Master's degree from a research university in the field of Business Economics or Business Administration with a specialization in Accountancy and Controlling; the content of the programme has to meet specific requirements; for instance, it needs to include courses in Accounting Internal Control.

Onderzoek

The profile Accountancy focuses on both practically oriented and academic research. On the one hand, you will become familiar with the outcomes of research in the fields of audit quality, information systems, corporate reporting, and corporate governance. On the other hand, you will perform practically-oriented assignments as well as research assignments yourself, which will help you to develop your academic skills.

The team of lecturers is a mix of practitioners and active researchers. Their research projects (often conducted in collaboration with external parties) focus on areas such as: integrated reporting, voluntary disclosure, Corporate Social Responsibility, risk management, board composition and more.

  • Lucia Bellora-Bienengräber, Sebastian Firk, Martijn van der Steen and, Ann Tank and Jennifer Joe investigate how auditors navigate the introduction of AI in the audit profession.
  • Reggy Hooghiemstra, Dennis Veltrop, and Floor Rink study the effects of multiple team membership on audit quality.
