Results from project meeting, October 6 2017, Royal HaskoningDHV office, Amersfoort
The research team, private partners, and valorisation panel members came together to discuss the progress and the way forward of the research project. Research team members Nicole Huijst and Nadja Contzen presented (initial) results of the first empirical studies and their plans for the next research phase (questionnaire/case studies). In addition, Irene Maltagliati presented the results of her master thesis which she had written as part of the NWO project.
During a very lively discussion, the private partners and valorisation panel members gave feedback and inputs and the research team answered questions. With regard to the next project phase, the research team was especially interested in the participants’ ideas of disputed energy innovations. Amongst other innovations, participants proposed Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) as a controversial technology to study. Interestingly, they emphasized especially that CCS might cause conflicts within values, namely biospheric values. One private partner described the conflict as follows: “Green person 1 claims ‘We need it because we have to save the planet!’, and green person 2 responds ‘We should forbid it because we have to save the planet!’”. Conflicts within values seem indeed worthwhile to study from a theoretical as well as practical point of view; already during the last project meeting conflicts within values emerged as a hot topic for practitioners.
