Understanding the Future: Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping our world, from healthcare and law to arts and engineering. The Minor AI offers students at the University of Groningen the opportunity to develop a broad understanding of AI, its possibilities, limitations, and societal impact. Whether you’re studying law, arts, or science, this minor equips you with the knowledge to navigate AI’s role in your future career.

Why do we offer this Minor?

The University of Groningen wants to provide each of its students with the opportunity to gain knowledge of and skills for AI, because we expect it to play a role in all future professions. The minor combines courses that address technical aspects of AI with courses that address societal impact. It does not require prior technical skills, so it is open to all.

Key questions we address

  • How does AI work? From classical approaches to modern-day machine learning and generative AI, such as ChatGPT.
  • What are the ethical and legal challenges of AI, and how can we mitigate risks?
  • How can we as humans collaborate with AI, and how can it be applied in your field of study or future profession?

Course programme

The Minor AI is a first-semester programme (30 EC) divided into two blocks, combining technical foundations with societal and legal perspectives. The minor concludes with a multidisciplinary group project where you apply AI to real-world challenges in your field. More information about the courses can be found below.

Who is this Minor for?

This minor is designed for nearly all University of Groningen bachelor students (see Entry requirements and Capacity), regardless of your background. You’ll learn how AI intersects with your field, and how you can contribute to its responsible development.

The Minor AI is developed in collaboration with:
  • The Faculty of Science and Engineering
  • The Faculty of Law
  • The Faculty of Arts
  • The Jantina Tammes School of Digital Society, Technology & AI
