Planning lecture
On November 16, Sjoerd Feenstra, the City Architect of Zwolle, will visit Groningen. His Planning Lecture is titled 'Zwolle's Climate-Adaptive Urban Future'.
This edition of the Planning Lecture will take place on the Zernike Campus in Groningen, in room 5419.0015. The lecture begins at 13:45, with doors opening at 13:30.
‘The Netherlands: Now & Future’
In a country where every square meter counts, the call for strategic oversight is stronger than ever. What choices do we make when housing, agriculture, nature, infrastructure, and safety all compete for priority? With a new *Nota Ruimte* (Spatial Planning Policy Document), the Ministry of Housing and Spatial Planning demonstrates how it is taking the lead and setting the long-term course for the future spatial organization of the Netherlands.
In the 33rd Planning Lecture, titled ‘The Netherlands: Now & Future,’ Minister Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan will present the critical choices outlined in the *Nota Ruimte* and share her vision for ensuring the Netherlands remains a livable place for generations to come.
The lecture will take place on December 7, 2026, at the Nieuwe Kerk in Groningen, starting at 4:00 PM (doors open at 3:30 PM). The lecture will be delivered in Dutch, with live English translation provided.
Prior to the lecture, attendees can also view a mini-exhibition in the church titled ‘Spatial Planning Policy: From the Past to the Present’—a seven-part series tracing a century of spatial planning in the Netherlands.

Planning lecture
The Planning lecture is organised by the Department of Spatial Planning and Environment of the Faculty of Spatial Sciences. The idea of the Planning lecture is to have an informative an discipline related presentation on state-of-the-art debates in Planning and/or Geography either in planning practice, or in academia. We hope that visitors get inspired by a lecture that makes it possible to generate new reflections on existing ideas and concepts. The lecture series invites the audience to develop new perspectives and to get beyond business-as-usual.
For whom?
The Planning lecture is public. First of all students and staff from the Faculty of Spatial Sciences are very much welcomed. The very same is true for students and staff from other disciplines. And last but not least, we do also warmly invite professionals and simply those that are interested to join the lecture series.
