Research into transferable poverty in peat district

Professor in Rural Development Dirk Strijker and economic geographer dr. Arjen Edzes will research poverty among 12.000 families in the Veenkoloniën, the peat district that spreads through Groningen and Drenthe. This poverty is often passed on from generation to generation. The research should provide more insight into the causes of inherited poverty. This will help municipalities and organizations to address poverty more effectively. The project is funded by the provinces of Groningen and Drenthe.
The research is part of the 'Alliance of Power' project, in which a large number of organizations in the Veenkoloniën want to work together to reduce inheritable poverty. The Alliance is founded by the Welfare Organization Tinten, supported by the Faculty of Spatial Sciences of the RUG, and aims to support welfare and health organizations in tackling transferable poverty in the area.
