It seems simple beforehand: just take a course or two in Spanish or Portuguese and you are ready to go abroad and take classes. The reality is different. You have to have great language skills to take courses and listen to lectures in a foreign language. Some universities demand that you take a language test, these can be quite expensive. Most universities have adapted the exchange program so that language is less of a barrier. In Lissabon you don’t take classes, but you do research or a final year project. The language of communication is in that case English. Other universities offer a broad program of English taught courses (for example in Joensuu, Finland).
