About us Faculty of Spatial Sciences Education International students Exchange Students Courses

Possible course combinations for students leaving late December or early January

Some students exchanged to the Faculty of Spatial Sciences for the Autumn semester (starting early September in Groningen, but ending late January/early February), are faced with the fact that their home university starts the next semester early or mid-January, making it necessary for these students to return home late December or early January. In that case, you can not take any ‘regular’ 1b courses, because there will be 2 more teaching weeks and 2 examination weeks in January that you can not attend. The maximum amount of ECs you can collect in a shortened first semester in Groningen (4 months) is 25 (normally 30 EC for a full 5 month semester); you should expect a much heavier study load in the 1a semester and a somewhat lighter study load in the 1b semester.

The following course combination is possible in a 4 month stay:

  • ‘Spatial Problems and Spatial Policies’ (10 EC) in 1a + the first 6 weeks of 1b
  • plus 1 ‘Dutch Studies’ course from the Faculty of Arts, 5 EC (as the Dutch Studies courses start in September and end in December)
  • plus other courses totaling to 10 EC in 1a (one course of 10 EC or two courses of 5 EC each)

Another option in a 4 month stay is:

  • ‘Spatial Problems and Spatial Policies’ (10 EC) in 1a + the first 6 weeks of 1b
  • plus other courses totaling to 15 EC in 1a (combination of 5 EC courses or one 10 EC course plus one 5 EC course)
