Bart Streumer will talk about: "Self-Effacing Truths: Berkeley, Quasi-Realism, Consequentialism
"In this talk I will give a brief overview of a book I’m currently working on. The book will discuss views in different parts of philosophy that mimic or incorporate claims made by opposing views. Examples are what Berkeley says about ordinary objects such as rocks or tables in metaphysics, what quasi-realists say about normative mind-independence in metaethics, and what consequentialists say about ‘consequentialising' and self-effacement in normative ethics. I will try to identify some general patterns and will try to say something about what this shows. I will also be very interested in suggestions from you — perhaps there are further examples of this pattern that I could look into from areas of philosophy that you know well."
