Inaugural lectures Marc Broekema and Ronald van Dijk

On Friday 25 September, Professors of Practice Marc Broekema and Ronald van Dijk will both deliver their inaugural lectures. Broekema comes from the field of valuation, while Van Dijk comes from asset management. Both view financial outcomes as a human product: Broekema from the perspective of professional judgment, Van Dijk from the perspective of market structure. In their lectures, they will elaborate on these perspectives.

Financial outcomes arise in processes in which interests play a role. The professors differ in opinion on where the vulnerabilities in these processes lie. Broekema looks for it in the expert’s mind: in cognitive biases and the design of the valuation process. Van Dijk looks for it in the chain: in mandates, categories, and accountability requirements that determine which choices can be explained — and thus what choices remain. They pose human judgment versus institutional architecture. Both professors advocate for a profession in which judgment, dissent, and explainability are given a place alongside the model outcome.
