Marc Broekema appointed as Professor of Practice in Corporate Valuation, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Restructuring

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) is pleased to announce that Marc Broekema has been appointed as Professor of Practice in Corporate Valuation, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Restructuring. The special chair is situated within the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance.
In his new role as professor of practice, Broekema will play an important role in maintaining and further developing FEB’s executive education in the field of Mergers & Acquisitions (M&A’s). His appointment is of great importance for the Executive Programme in Corporate Restructuring and the Executive Master Mergers Acquisitions and Valuation (EMAV) that the University of Groningen Business School (UGBS) offers, the latter of which is a joint degree with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU).
Furthermore, Broekema will contribute to education in FEB’s Masters’s programmes in Finance and International Financial Management and research within the Department of Economics, Econometrics and Finance (EEF). FEB’s education in corporate valuation focuses on equipping students with the tools and knowledge needed to assess company value and value creation in various contexts, particularly throughout all the phases of an M&A process - from strategy to deal execution and merger integration - and in corporate restructuring.
Track record as valuation advisor and teacher
Broekema is an experienced business valuation professional. Next to his role as professor practice at FEB, he will continue to work as Managing Director (previously as Co-Head Valuation Services Netherlands and since 1 July 2025 as Head of Expert Services Netherlands) at Kroll (formerly Duff & Phelps), a financial and risk advisory firm. At Kroll, Broekema focuses on valuation issues that arise in the corporate life cycle, ranging from M&A initiatives, general valuation consulting, contentious valuation, restructuring valuation to and quantum of damages. In addition to his role at Kroll, he serves as an expert judge at the Enterprise Chamber of the Amsterdam Court of Appeal, which role he will also maintain next to his professorship at FEB. Throughout his career, Broekema has assisted clients with their valuation challenges across various industries and borders. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored with the Valuation and Appraisal Advisor of the Year Award (presented by Finance Monthly, UK) for the Netherlands in both 2018 and 2019.
His proven track record as valuation advisor and court-appointed valuation expert is of great benefit for his teaching and research activities at FEB. Broekema obtained his PhD at Leiden University, where he carried out empirical research into business valuation and cognitive bias. After completing his PhD, he continued working at Leiden University as a part-time assistant professor and research fellow. In this role, he was involved in multiple courses for master’s programs and executive education programs, earning him a strong track record in teaching.
